Movie Review: Donnie Brasco
Even though this is a 1997 movie, I had never seen it before. After hearing Emin rave about it, I decided to rent it today. Here is a quick outline from IMDB:
This true story follows FBI agent Joe Pistone as he infiltrates the mafia of New York. Befriending Lefty Ruggiero, Pistone (under the name Donnie Brasco) is able to embed himself in a mafia faction lead by Sonny Black. Ruggiero and Pistone become tight as the group goes about collecting money for 'the bosses'. Eventually, the group become big time when Black himself becomes a boss, all the while Pistone collects evidence. However, the trials and tribulations of the undercover work become more than Pistone can bear. His marriage falls apart and to top it off, the mafia suspect a mole in the organization. The real dilemma is afforded to Pistone, who knows if he walks away from the mafia, Ruggiero will be the one punished.
Oh what a movie! It isn't just an action movie about the mafia. It is so much deeper and extremely intense. The emotion portrayed by the characters, especially Al Pacino, is incredibly authentic. Knowing it is a true story makes it even more amazing. I don't know what else to say about it, mainly because I just finished watching it and I still feel the emotional turmoil.
This is definitely a movie to watch if you are a fan of the Godfather series, Casino, Goodfellas, etc. 4/5 stars.
Favorite Quote:
Lefty: And listen to me, if Donnie calls... tell him... if it was gonna be anyone, I'm glad it was him. All right?
Trivia:
Tom Cruise was originally set to play the role of Joseph D. Pistone, but the release of Goodfellas (1990) pushed back the release of this movie so the role eventually went to Johnny Depp.
