Deja Vu?

Last year, October 10, 2005, I got a call from a random broker saying Honeywell stock is going to shoot to $60 within the next 6 months and that it is going to get bought. I blogged about this, saying:

October 10, 2005
What would happen if I took the advise of a random stock broker and buy Honeywell stock? He says it will jump to $60/share in the next 3 to 6 months. Let's see.
October 10 Closing Price: $35.87

Now, a year later, the same guy calls and says the exact same things about Honeywell. The current price of the stock? $42.62. Not a bad 18% increase, but nothing close to the $60 I was promised.

Is there something I'm missing? Is this a new, very odd, scam?

Birthday Gift Anyone?

So my birthday is fast approaching (November 8) and I was thinking to myself, "What can I do to help out the people I love find me the perfect gift?" Well here is an excellent idea: Pitch in together and buy me this:

That is the Sony Portable Reader System. You can store books, PDFs and text on it and read it anywhere. The screen reads just like paper, with no strain on your eyes. It uses new E-Ink technology to passively display text.

Anyway, the damn thing costs $350, but if 10 people pitch in... ok I don't know 10 people that are going to get me gifts. DAMN

In case you are wondering, the link for details is at the Sony Style website. There is a convenient buy button, just in case...

Underestimate Your Abilities

Ever get that feeling that you never get to finish everything you planned on doing for that day? Here's an idea: Shorten your to-do list to about half of what you know you can complete. I know it doesn't seem like it, but it will do an amazing job of boosting your confidence and will give you that extra kick you need to keep on going.

One of my biggest problems is being too optimistic when it comes to deadlines and what I can do in a day. This alone causes me to be less productive during the day since I'm spending so much time worrying if I will be able to finish everything.

stopwatch

Another thing that I've stopped doing is timing every single activity. I used to constantly use a digital stopwatch that I made in C# to time how long each of my work activities took. I knew I was overdoing it when I realized I was typing how long it took me to eat lunch and to wash my hands. Now I charge based on value, not hours. This makes me a lot more comfortable when it comes to working and gives me more freedom.

Google Takes Another Stab at Microsoft with Google Docs

Google has quietly integrated their Writely product with Google Spreadsheets to create Google Docs. Basically it allows you to have a central place to work with documents online.

While I still think that there is a lot of work to be done for this to be remotely considered a threat to Microsoft Office, it is a step in the right direction. Check out the tour for yourself with their Mini Tour or get started with Google Docs.

101 Ways To Build Link Popularity

This site has an extremely comprehensive list of what to do to get your site linked.  One of my favorite's is:

Build a "101 list". These get Dugg all the time, and often become "authority documents". People can't resist linking to these (hint, hint).

I'm sure you can figure out the irony on your own. It's really got a nice summary of everything you can do. Of course the problem is then to have the time to do everything. That's up to you, my friend!

Golden Palace

Now this is a place for an Armenian to live! It reminds me of that story of the guy who turned everything he touched into gold. Yeah... I don't remember the rest of that story. Oh well.

Hong Kong newest tourist attraction named "The Golden House" is built from 2 tonnes of gold and costs 300 million HK (38 million USD) dollars to build. Its design is based mainly on Europe's ancient palace, sculpture and artwork, and it will be open to the public on September 23, 2006. Hoping to attraction more mainland China tourists, it is also possible for couples use this new attraction as a place for exchanging wedding vows. Click on the pictures for a larger view.

Another Reason To Blog

I checked my email today and noticed I had a comment on one of my older blog posts:

arthur, you are famous... I don't know if you know this but your blog was used by the ABA Journal eReport. Here is a link to the article.
http://www.abanet.org/journal/ereport/oc6juror.html
How about that?

I checked the site and, indeed, I had been mentioned in the article:

Indeed, prospective jurors and active jurors are already blogging about their past experiences, and at least on one occasion, directly from the courthouse during service.

I'm the "directly" guy. Call me ignorant, but I didn't know what the ABA Journal was. Going to abanet.org fixed that pretty quickly: The American Bar Association.

Webstats for yesterday shows a 300% increase in traffic. That's a pretty good incentive to keep on blogging!

Running for Geeks

After a 2 year hiatus from running, I finally decided to start again. I knew that I had to get myself motivated, so the first thing I did was buy the new Nike Air Max 360s:

These shoes are amazing. The midsole has been replaced by Air-Sole. They are also extremely lightweight. Try them out, they are definitely worth their rather hefty price.

Then I bought a running shirt and running shorts. Too bad I look like an Armo when I wear them, but hopefully I'll be running too fast for it to get noticed =)

Now onto the technology. I'm a statistics freak and need every single thing tracked, charted, and saved! I used a combination of 2 websites to make this happen.

First was traineo. This very Web 2.0 AJAX-ified website makes you want to exercise again! Their very nice design and colorful sections make exercise fun. I set up an account and set my weight goal to 130 lbs. Right now I'm 154 so that's a 24 pound drop. A great feature of the website is that you can set up "motivators" to help you stay on target. These are people you know that get emailed every week with an update on your status. Knowing that someone else is going to see your progress gives you that extra push to try harder. You can see my traineo account at http://chaparyan.traineo.com/

The second website that is very useful is Walk Jog Run. They have done a nice job of integrating Google Maps, allowing you to select your starting location and trace your route. In the end it will tell you your average speed, total miles, and how many calories you burned. I'm mainly using this to keep track of my distance.

So how was my first day of running? Not bad at all. I ran for about 1 hour, walking about 30% of the time. I covered 3.9 miles and averaged 4mph, which is not bad considering I want to be running around 6 to 10 miles per day within a couple of months.

Clickdensity - Website Heat Maps

While it's not free (although they do have a free 30 day trial) this is one of the coolest website statistical tools out there. Basically it will show you a heat map with most clicked on spots "hotter" than sections that are not clicked on as often. A picture tells all:

Fastest Way To Save $200 / Month

Transfer that 20% APR credit card with an $8,000 balance to your new 0% for life Discover card. Oh the joys of shifting debt! But yeah, all my debt will be paid off by next year. I'm really tired of it. Thanks for the fun, but it's time to get rid of you now.

And why do random people make random comments on my blog entries from over a year ago? I'm so confused!

And why haven't I changed this blog over to DreamHost? I'm glad you asked. It's because I want to first save all the statistical information. I'd hate to lose all those beautiful stats. HATE I TELL YOU!

Remember those days that I would post a picture with each entry? Well here it comes!

Oh and wonder where I had been getting all those pictures? photo.net, that's where. Check it out. It's quite an amazing (and free) website.

Moving Servers

After over 2 years with 1&1 (out of sheer necessity to use the free hosting), I am finally switching over to DreamHost. These guys have amazing customer service and very fast servers. If you want to sign up with them, let me know. I can get you a nice discount.

I am also in the process of developing a new logo and website for CornerBLUE. If I have time, I'll switch my blog over to WordPress. All this while trying to deal with my dozen or so projects. Do you really need to ask why there haven't been updates on this site?

Oh and a new blog is coming from my wonderful lady. I don't want to spoil the surprise, but it's going to be a heck of a lot more interesting than my blog!

I'll write another blog once the transfer to DreamHost is done. YAY!
